Biden picks Michael Murphy to be US envoy to Bosnia and Herzegovina

President Joe Biden has tapped veteran US diplomat Michael Murphy to be the US’s next ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the White House announced on Friday.

Murphy is a 29-year veteran of the US Foreign Service who currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European & Eurasian Affairs. His portfolio includes European security, conventional arms control and Arctic Security, according to his State Department biography.

Murphy previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US embassy in Kosovo from 2009 to 2012, and served the three years prior as political counselor at the US embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He currently holds the diplomatic rank of Minister Counselor.

It is unclear when the Senate will take up Murphy’s nomination with the chamber set to leave for the summer recess in two weeks, and a number of items on Biden’s legislative agenda in limbo.
